LP 06: Communication, Facilitation and Dealing with Conflict (14 Credits)


Learning Programme Description

This course designed for learners working in a Ward Committee or Local Government structure, where the acquisition of skills and competence from this course will add value to their job. This course will contribute to the aspirations of individuals seeking to develop a career pathway in Local Government and administration by applying communication, interpersonal and conflict management principles in Ward Committee functions, processes; and applying knowledge of community issues in relation to development projects.


Learner Outcomes

After completion of this course learners will be able to:–

  • Understand and explain the communication and delegated function of ward committees
  • Describe and apply communication techniques in the functioning of ward committees
  • Understand and describe the management of municipal performance and the role of ward committees
  • Understand and explain the role of ward committees in Council decision-making and accountability
  • Apply basic conflict management techniques to ensure effective resolutions in conflict situations that may arise in ward committee functioning
  • Apply the principles of facilitation to effectively manage relations within the Ward Committee
  • Apply an understanding of the dynamics and structures prevalent in communities
  • Advise communities of the effect that development projects have on communities in a local context.
  • Advise community structures on the effect that regeneration of the local economy will have
  • Advise community structures on the different types of agreements

Duration : 12 days


Entry Requirements

Matric or equivalent, or competence in communication and experience of working in the local government.
